(Disclaimer: Just less than 2 hours after writing this post, Kawhi Leonard signed with the Clippers (bummer). But Kawhi is not the main point of this article so decided to still share this with you. Please enjoy. – Marv)
It’s been almost a week now. Still no Kawhi.
If you are an NBA freak like me, you know what I’m talking about.
Kawhi Leonard is the king of the basketball landscape right now (sorry Lebron).
If you have been hiding under a rock this past month, you probably didn’t realize that the Toronto Raptors is the new NBA champion, dethroning the almighty Golden State Warriors — with Kawhi Leonard being Toronto’s savior who gave the Raptors their first championship in franchise history!
And if you’ve been following me on social media, you may very well know that I am a huge Lakers fan (huge = understatement).
So why do I care about Kawhi?
Because after winning the championship for the Raps, he is now a free agent (sorta like a freelancer like you and me) and is FREE to either stay with Toronto or move to other NBA teams.
One of the 2 other lucky teams that Kawhi is leaning towards is MY LAKERS! (The other one is the other LA team, the Clippers)
Anyway, Kawhi was supposed to have announced his new team as soon as free agency opened last July 1st.
However, it is already July 6th and still no word from him and his camp.
And throughout those past 6 days (in fact even weeks prior to that), I’ve been obsessed with all the NBA talk shows on YouTube and podcasts discussing the Kawhi free agency (#kawhinot).
ESPN, Inside the NBA, The Starters, Bleacher Report, NBA TV, Stephen A. Smith, Skip Bayless, Woj, etc. are the search terms you will find in my YouTube search history.
Now wherever Kawhi goes, and after he makes THE DECISION, do you think I will stop watching those shows?
I think not.
It’s become part of my morning routine…
And I think it’s also part of my being Filipino to be USISERO or CHISMOSO.
I remember growing up without the internet and cable in the 80’s and we would watch those showbiz gossip shows every day.
See True, Showbiz Lingo, Cristy Per Minute, That’s Entertainment — this has become part of my life. (Aminin niyo nanonood kayo :))
And I believe that the value of these shows is that they bring THE SIZZLE to THE STEAK.
What I mean by this is that THE SIZZLE would be the BUILD UP to an EVENT or HAPPENING — THE STEAK.
For the basketball world, THE STEAK would be: Khawi’s “The Decision”, Free Agency Fever, Summer League, The NBA Draft, Opening of the NBA, The Playoffs, The Finals, etc.
For the showbiz world, it would be: a new movie, a new TV show, a love team, a budding actor, FAMAS awards…
You know why?
Because without the sizzle, there is no steak.
Without those shows and people building up those events, they will flop and disappear in obscurity.
It also KILLS THE BOREDOM — you don’t expect something spectacular happening every single day don’t you?
What if there is an NBA finals game every day, will you still look forward to it?
If there is an Oscar Award handed out every week, will people still consider it valuable?
I’m sure Leonardo Di Caprio would have won dozens of it by now (the fact that he has only 1 right now is weird, right?)
Okay, I digress. (This is just how my brain works most of the time :))
And that’s having both SIZZLE PLUS THE STEAK is important, even outside the basketball and showbiz realms.
How do you apply it to yourself then?
Ask yourself these questions:
Are you creating regular content about your craft in the form of a blog, podcast, or vlog…
Or posting on your Facebook wall, IG or LinkedIn?
Okay, you might think: “I don’t have time nor the expertise, why will people listen to me.”
Hey, you! Stop thinking that.
Do you remember the NBA shows that I mentioned earlier?
If you watch them the past few days, they’ve saying the almost same things about the Kawhi free agency.
Nothing’s changed, Kawhi still hasn’t decided.
But they come out with content every day with a little twist to it to make it a bit different so that they have an “excuse” to produce a show.
(And get paid for it. Smart!)
It’s the same freaking thing but you know what???
People still watch! They get tons of views!
I WATCH THEM. (don’t call me stupid okay)
Because to tell you the truth, I LIKE THE SIZZLE.
In fact, most of the time: I LOVE THE SIZZLE MORE THAN THE STEAK.
There I said it.
Let me prove my point.
Back to the NBA analogy,
I watch all those pre-game shows, but when it comes to the actual game, I tune out.
I catch a glimpse of it and then turn off the tv.
Then in the evening, I just watch the YouTube highlights.
And I believe I am not alone.
There’s this guy Chris Smoove who comes out with news and game highlights.
You know how many subscribers he has?
You know how many view he gets from those highlights?
So as a freelancer, you have to start turning up the heat and adding SIZZLE to your STEAK.
THE STEAK for me is YOU. Your core offering. The meat of your freelancing work.
It has to be cooked the right way.
The right way being…how your client, prospect or market likes it.
When you go to a restaurant and order a steak, what that line the waiter asks you?
“How do you want your steak done: rare, medium rare, medium well or well done?”
I’m a medium well kind of person — I don’t like it too cooked or too bloody.
Imagine serving rare steak to a person hemophobia (fear of blood) (and yes, I had to google it).
You’ll scare the hell out of your customer.
You have to know your market.
You have to know their problems, their likes and their dislikes.
You have to be updated on the latest trends in your niche and keep your ear on the ground.
Ok, time for my steak dinner now. This post made me hungry.
